Scholarships and School Lunch

Although the government had abolished tuition fees for secondary school students the transition rate from primary to secondary school still requires improvement. The additional fees schools charge is one of the barriers to secondary enrollment, which also negatively affect student retention rates nationally. This is why the Girl Aid Foundation is planning to launch a program that will offer scholarships to students who cannot afford the additional fees levied by secondary schools, so that more students could transition from primary to secondary school.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa has the highest rate of global hunger. It is estimated that about a third of the Kenyan population is undernourished and that more than 20 million children go to school without lunch. Chronic undernutrition stunts growth and results in poor learning as well as academic underperformance. Often children are required to help families to secure food which cause them to stay absent and fall behind with school work. The Girl Aid Foundation plans to start with a new initiative to provide school lunch to secondary students, which will further enhance the transition rate from primary to secondary school, improve school attendance as well as the secondary completion rate.
